We Don’t Care!

Please Don't Interrupt Me While I'm Ignoring You

Social media sites like facebook have become incredible vehicles for keeping in touch with friends and family, sharing thoughts and ideas, and connecting people with your business.  Unfortunately, they’ve also become annoying outlets for attention seekers, shameless self-promoters, and clueless business owners.

Here are a few examples..

Random Person- “Work sucks today, can’t wait to hit the gym and have a few brews with the fellas!”

Random Band- “Buy our new album @ www.randomband.com!”

Random Business- “We’ll be having a sale on all men’s shoes tomorrow!”

Everyone Else- “WE DON’T CARE!!!”

We don’t care what you’re eating for dinner tonight.  We don’t care that your bands playing at some dive bar this weekend, and we certainly don’t care that your business has a mailing list.

You’re pushing a message on us.  You’re interrupting what’s supposed to be an enjoyable time.  You’re in essence, no better than a TV commercial that makes us all reach for the remote control.

The key to successfully promoting on social media is to not promote at all.

Here’s a better approach..

Random Person- “Do you hate work as much I do?  I found this cool website www.ihatework.com”

Random Band- “Just downloaded the new Radiohead album.. it’s so good.. and free on their website!”

Random Business- “Nike just came out with a new line of basketball shoes! www.newnikeshoe.com”

Everyone Else- “THANKS FOR SHARING!”

You wont gain peoples attention on facebook by talking AT them, but you will by joining the conversation.  Engage people with ideas, content, knowledge, wit, humor, solutions, creativity, uniqueness.. not advertisements.  Share things with people that they can use and value, and they’ll start to notice you.  Maybe even check out your website.  Maybe even care.

The “Pie” of the Commonwealth

by Matt Soper on March 4, 2010

Southbridge Loves pizza

If you ever visit my hometown of Southbridge Massachusetts, I can guarantee one thing.  You’ll find pizza.  Central Pizza, Brother’s Pizza, Geno’s Pizza, Zoe’s Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, Great Oak Pizza, Champion Pizza, Two Cousins Pizza, Southbridge Village Pizza, The Golden Greek & Pizza Chef all packed into a small 13,000 person populated town.  Did I mention that they all sell pizza?  Not a healthy environment for an indecisive pie eater.

Besides the obvious question of why none of these business owners thought to open up a burger joint.. how, at 1 pizza place per 500 households,  do these pizza shops all manage to co-exist and survive year after year?

a) Southbridgians eat massive amounts of pizza.

b) Besides the 11 Chinese Restaurants in town, there aren’t many other options for eating out.

c) They do a good job of differentiating themselves.  ???

I know it sounds like a contradiction..  but their initial lack of differentiation forces them to have to micro-differentiate (an actual term).

For Instance…

Central Pizza (The Veterans)- No nonsense, no flash and a basic menu, but they’ve been around the longest for a reason. They’ve got the best pizza in town.

Brother’s Pizza (The Foodies)- Known for their detailed menu and their pursuit to make usual items special.

Geno’s Pizza (The Ambitious New Guy)- Offers a huge selection of wings, desserts & unique appetizers, all things unavailable anywhere else.

The key to staying a float in a highly saturated market, is of course, find a niche & stand out.  These pizza parlors seem to follow this golden rule.

Final Thought:  Just open up a taco shop.

Thank you to AngelsWings for the great pic.
